Tigist Bacha

Ethiopia

Dr. Tigist Bacha is a renowned Associate Professor at Saint Paul’s Millennium Medical College and Ethiopia’s first Pediatric Emergency and ICU physician.
A pioneer in acute pediatric care, she founded Ethiopia’s first Pediatric ICU and Procedural Sedation Clinic. Dr. Tigist is also the Program Director for Ethiopia’s first joint Pediatric emrgency and critical care (PECC) Fellowship Program, the second of its kind in East Africa.

She holds a Doctorate in Medicine from Gondar University, a Pediatric Specialty Certificate from Addis Ababa University, and an MPH from Addis Continental School of Public Health. She completed advanced fellowships in Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Intensive Care through the University of Wisconsin (USA) and Addis Ababa University, as well as Cardiac Intensive Care at Hadassah Medical Center (Israel).

Dr. Tigist has played a key role in shaping Ethiopia’s emergency and critical care systems. She co-led the establishment of the country’s first Emergency Medicine Residency, a Master’s program in Emergency and Critical Care, and Ethiopia’s first Pediatric ICU. She has also contributed internationally through her work with the African Federation of Emergency Medicine and the WHO on Basic Emergency Training.

As a member of the Special Interest Groups for Critical Care and Pediatric Emergency Medicine within the International Federation of Emergency Medicine (IFEM), she actively contributes to the advancement of global emergency medicine. She has also been involved in the development of multiple guidelines, including ETAT+ Guidelines for Emergency Management in Ethiopia.

Dr. Tigist has established over 30 international partnerships, securing resources for pediatric care in Ethiopia. An honorary faculty member at the University of Wisconsin, she is a strong advocate for pediatric care in low-resource settings.

With over 40 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Tigist has received multiple awards, including the Todels Gold Award and 13 Best Teacher Awards. Her current research on pediatric sepsis and low-fidelity simulation aims to improve medical training in Africa. She is also actively engaged in community outreach and medical volunteer work.
