Ruud Nijman is an honorary senior clinical lecturer at Imperial College London with a special interest in observational studies and clinical trials in diagnostics and clinical decision making in paediatric emergency medicine and acute childhood infections. He leads the Research Wolfson Centre for Paediatric Accident and Emergency Care Research. He is also a consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine at St. Mary’s hospital – Imperial College NHS Healthcare Trust in London. He originally trained as a medical doctor at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, The Netherlands (2007). He completed his PhD in Paediatrics and Clinical epidemiology at the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, on the topic of diagnostic strategies for children with fever at risk of serious bacterial infection presenting to emergency care (2014). He also completed an MSc in Clinical Epidemiology at the Netherlands Institute of Health Sciences (2011). His academic work, enabled by grants from for example NIHR, BRC and ESPID, has focussed mainly on the recognition and management of children at risk for serious bacterial infections presenting to the emergency department. This includes the development and evaluation of point-of-care tests, the discovery and validation of biomarkers, understanding trends in epidemiology of acute childhood infections, and improving clinical decision making in the emergency care of acute infections. Ruud co-authored two children’s books to promote patient education of children presenting to the emergency department. He is an active steering committee member of the Research in European Pediatric Emergency Medicine (REPEM) network and a member of the executive committee of the European Society of Emergency Paediatrics (EUSEP).
